The
Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition : A New Psychology
of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth
M. Scott, Md. Peck
Perhaps no book in this generation has had a more profound
impact on our intellectual and spiritual lives than The Road
Less Traveled. With sales of more than seven million copies
in the United States and Canada, and translations into more
than twenty-three languages, it has made publishing history,
with more than ten years on the New York Times bestseller
list.
Now, with
a new Introduction by the author, written especially for this
twenty-fifth anniversary deluxe trade paperback edition of
the all-time national bestseller in its field, M. Scott Peck
explains the ideas that shaped this book and that continue
to influence an ever-growing audience of readers.
Written
in a voice that is timeless in its message of understanding,
The Road Less Traveled continues to help us explore the very
nature of loving relationships and leads us toward a new serenity
and fullness of life. It helps us learn how to distinguish
dependency from love; how to become a more sensitive parent;
and ultimately how to become one's own true self.
Recognizing
that, as in the famous opening line of his book, "Life is
difficult" and that the journey to spiritual growth is a long
one, Dr. Peck never bullies his readers, but rather guides
them gently through the hard and often painful process of
change toward a higher level of self-understanding.

The
Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom
Henri J. M. Nouwen
Amazon.com The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish
to Freedom is a collection of passages from Henri Nouwen's
journals, written during a period when his self-esteem evaporated,
his energy to work disappeared, and God seemed entirely unreal.
This is not a book to be read straight through: each short
chapter takes time to digest, because, like the following
passage, each of Nouwen's thoughts has the raw complexity
of real honesty:
Your body
needs to be held and to hold, to be touched and to touch.
None of these needs is to be despised, denied, or repressed.
But you have to keep searching for your body's deeper need,
the need for genuine love. Every time you are able to go beyond
the body's superficial desires for love, you are bringing
your body home and moving toward integration and unity. --Michael
Joseph Gross

There
Must Be More Than This: Finding More Life, Love, and Meaning
by Overcoming Your Soft Addictions
Judith Wright
There IS more than this and you can have it! What keeps us
from living the rich, fulfilling lives we desire? Judith Wright
has found that too often we are tripped up by our dependence
on seemingly harmless habits like shopping, watching TV, gossiping,
and surfing the net. These are soft addictions, and they form
a powerful net that traps us, preventing us from having more
love and meaning in our lives. They fill up our time, but
leave us feeling empty, asking, “Is this all there is to life?
There must be more than this.”
Judith
Wright’s fresh perspective and proven program invite you to
overcome your soft addictions and discover MORE–a full, engaging
life of more intimacy, purpose, joy, satisfaction and love.
She promises a life in which you advance your goals and your
vision every day. You will live more purposefully and feel
more intensely, stop asking the small questions and start
asking the big ones. You will fill your life with meaningful
activity, and your soft addictions will fall away.
Educator
and life coach Judith Wright coined the term soft addictions™
after years of working with students who came to her courses
to get more out of life. They would experience insights in
class but be unable to fully apply them to their lives. Wright
found that her students were limiting their experience and
enjoyment of life by engaging in unsatisfying routines. She
discovered that these time wasters and draining habits, which
she named soft addictions, have a powerful hold on us because
they satisfy certain wants–to zone out, feel busy, numb painful
feelings, or avoid anxieties–but ignore deeper hungers for
love, beauty, spirituality and meaning. They substitute a
superficial high or sense of activity for a sense of genuine
purpose and fulfillment. In a very real sense, we become hooked
on these habitual behaviors. But unlike drugs or alcohol,
our soft addictions arrive in the seductive guise of a “normal,”
socially acceptable activity.
There
Must Be More Than This helps you identify and fulfill the
deeper longings behind your soft addictions. Judith Wright’s
eight-step program has now been used by hundreds of her students
to overcome their soft addictions and open up their lives
to a greater sense of purpose and happiness. There Must Be
More Than This shares her methods, along with real-life, inspirational
stories of success. Invite More into your life and know that
you are living the life you were meant to live.

The
Worship Warrior: Finding the Power to Overcome
Chuck D. Pierce
According to the authors, the Church is being prepared to enter
its most dynamic season of warfare, worship and harvest. The
key to victory during this time will be our worship. When we
praise God, He comes into our midst and manifests His rule and
authority in our environment. He actually abides with us and
"seats" Himself in the very center of our lives to lead us in
the paths He chooses for us. When we ascend in worship we go
to the throne of God and receive our strategy from Him to fulfill
His purposes on Earth. In effect, we align with God's purposes
and then we descend with our marching orders to accomplish those
purposes. The result of this supernatural process will be a
great harvest of souls for God's kingdom. |

Healing
the Hardware of the Soul: How Making the Brain-Soul Connection
Can Optimize Your Life, Love, and Spiritual Growth
Daniel G. Amen
Dr. Daniel Amen's breakthrough brain-healing program has helped
hundreds of thousands to overcome depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, and attention deficit disorder. The maverick author
of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life and Healing ADD now
presents his proven program for repairing and strengthening
our relationships, child-rearing practices, work and study
routines, and, ultimately, our soulful connections, in the
deepest ways possible. Guided by this book, each of us can
learn to balance and optimize the parts of the brain responsible
for inner growth, intimacy, and spiritual health.
Drawing
upon his experience with over fourteen thousand brain-imaging
studies of patients from all walks of life, Dr. Amen has developed
an essential tool called the Amen Brain System Checklist,
a 101-question self-test used to evaluate the five brain systems
that are key to achieving and maintaining a healthy brain-soul
connection. The questionnaire identifies the problem brain
areas readers may need to work on, offers insight into the
degree to which these imbalances affect their lives, and provides
targeted strategies for each area of the brain involved with
spiritual issues. These are just a few of the many "brain
prescriptions" to be found in Healing the Hardware of the
Soul:

Zen
and the Art of Falling in Love
Brenda, Ph.D
As the great teacher Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh once said, "We
never ask the meaning of life when we're in love." In fact,
the question we should really be asking is, "Why aren't we
in love all the time?"
We are
meant to be in love. Being in love energizes our daily existence,
fills us with positive feelings, heals the body and heart
and makes every moment precious. In Zen and the Art of Falling
in Love, psychologist, relationship expert and Zen practitioner
Brenda Shoshanna offers a completely different way of looking
at love by comparing the psychological understanding of relationships
with the timeless principles of Zen practice. Contrary to
popular opinion, real love never hurts -- it's the popularized
illusions we have about it that hurt and upset us.
Each chapter
in this book is structured around a different principle of
Zen practice, giving us many lessons we can readily absorb
to show us how to reclaim love, happiness and our true selves.
You'll learn new means of dealing with the usual trouble spots
in relationships, including miscommunication, insecurity and
jealousy. As you look at these and other issues through the
lens of Zen practice, you'll receive life-changing revelations
that will lead to a new understanding of relationships and
love.
Zen and
the Art of Falling in Love will set you on a path to inner
awareness and ultimate happiness. As you take this journey,
you'll meet different individuals who are struggling to make
love work in their own lives and you will develop a brand-new
understanding of what it really means to love. It is a wondrous
adventure that will show you how to open your life to love,
fall in love...and stay in love.

Guilt
is the Teacher, Love is the Lesson
Joan Borysenko
From the bestselling author of Minding the Body, Mending the
Mind: an accessible guide to healing the destructive effects
of guilt. The reaction by parents, teachers and peers to our
own actions often determines our sense of self - how confident
we feel and how secure we are about our place in the world.
When self-blame and pessimism begin to overtake self-esteem
and optimism, the rest may be emotional, physical and spiritual
distress.
In Guilt
is the Teacher, Love is the Answer, Dr. Joan Borysenko, a
Harvard Ph.D., explores this mind/body connection as she offers
personal and professional advice for journeying toward recovery
and self-love. Here at last is an insightful and uplifting
approach for turning the teachings of guilt into the lessons
of love.

If
We're So in Love, Why Aren't We Happy?: Using Spiritual Principles
to Solve Real Problems and Restore Your Passion
Susan Page
Susan Page, a Protestant minister, popular teacher, and bestselling
writer on relationships, now turns her hand to a crucial question
so many couples face: If we know we love each other, why do
we spend so much of our time together arguing, negotiating,
or making up? Why, quite simply, aren’t we happy?
Susan
has explored this question while working with and observing
countless couples struggling in their relationships. She discovered
something revolutionary: even the most troubled couples could
be enjoying each other if only they would adopt a few simple
yet powerful and deeply spiritual principles. Another revelation:
it only takes one member of the couple to make this work.
Yet another: by adopting these principles and letting go of
the popular myths and assumptions about relationships so many
of us have been taught, you can not only vastly improve your
relationship but develop your own inner sense of self. Your
relationship can become your spiritual path.
Those
who have followed Susan’s program report that their relationships
have become loving again, and that their sense of self-esteem
and spiritual development has been deepened. They no longer
call what they have with their mate a marriage or relationship
but rather a true spiritual partnership. The process outlined
here is simple yet profound and is based on what Susan calls
five sacred principles or acts that one member or both members
of the couple follow, principles that emerge naturally out
of the spiritual traditions of Christianity and Buddhism.

Love,
Freedom, Aloneness: The Koan of Relationships
Osho
In today's world, freedom is our basic condition, and until
we learn to live with that freedom, and learn to live by ourselves
and with ourselves, we are denying ourselves the possibility
of finding love and happiness with someone else.
Love can
only happen through freedom and in conjunction with a deep
respect for ourselves and the other. Is it possible to be
alone and not lonely? Where are the boundaries that define
"lust" versus "love"...and can lust ever grow into love? In
Love, Freedom, Aloneness you will find unique, radical, and
intelligent perspectives on these and other essential questions.
In our post-ideological world, where old moralities are out
of date, we have a golden opportunity to redefine and revitalize
the very foundations of our lives. We have the chance to start
afresh with ourselves, our relationships to others, and to
find fulfillment and success for the individual and for society
as a whole.

Awakening
the Buddhist Heart: Integrating Love, Meaning, and Connection
into Every Part of Your Life
John C Pierrakos
Four cassettes, 6 hrs. performance by the author In Awakening
the Buddha Within, Surya Das explained the foundations of
Buddhism and illuminated the Dharma path for Western readers.
In his follow-up book, Awakening to the Sacred, he showed
how to create a daily spiritual practice. While his first
two books focused on developing an inner spiritual life, in
AWAKENING THE BUDDHIST HEART shows listeners how to find a
sacred dimension in our relationships with ourselves and others
by actively taking our spiritual life out into the world.
A more mainstream complement to his previous, AWAKENING THE
BUDDHIST HEART shows how to develop a "spiritual intelligence"
that reflects our relationships with each and every living
thing around us.
By applying
the precepts of Tibetan Buddhism into our Western lives, we
can learn how to take our spiritual practice out into the
world, and into our family and community life. As humans,
no matter how devout, we need to feel loved, to feel connected
to each other as well as connected to a spiritual practice,
and the quality of our individual lives is vastly determined
by the quality of our relationships. As Surya Das writes,
everyone has room for improvement, whether it's in their relationships
with coworkers, friends, family, pets, the natural world,
the community, everything and everyone—each relationship is
important and essential for spiritual growth and development.
Buddhism
tells us that all of our bonds are sacred and sometimes our
adversaries prove to be our greatest teachers. Surya Das teaches
how to learn from those we love, as well as those we don't
love, and how to let go of negative emotions while developing
and expanding a spiritual intelligence. By providing specific
exercises, meditations, and prayers to share spiritual energy
with mates, children, friends, as well as strangers, and illustrated
with contemporary Western situations that reflect Buddhist
teachings, AWAKENING THE BUDDHIST HEART shows how by developing
our spiritual intelligence we can find and nurture the sacred
in all our relationships.

To
Build the Life You Want, Create the Work You Love: The Spiritual
Dimension of Entrepreneuring
Marsha Sinetar
Discover your life's work and gain inner satisfaction and
personal meaning with this inspiring, practical guide. In
this sequel to her phenomenal bestseller Do What You Love,
the Money Will Follow, Marsha Sinetar shows you how to put
her philosophy to work. Sinetar explores the qualities of
effective, fulfilled entrepreneurs who manage to find both
love and money by investing time, brainpower, and spiritual
energy in their work.
The author's
"spirituality" of entrepreneuring amounts to a popular Confucianism
for twenty-first-century capitalism. This does not mean that
Sinetar introduces readers to Chinese religion (though she
does cite the I Ching) but rather that she defines spirituality
as an embrace of roles necessitated by one's position within
a social and economic system that has taken on a covertly
religious significance. Spirituality is a matter of embracing
who one is and being where one is in the context of an economic
system that is market driven and incapable of generating enough
"jobs" in a conventional sense to go around. The upside of
this is that it turns corporate downsizing into an opportunity
for personal growth. The downside is that it obscures social
and economic forces associated with the downsizing. There
is a long tradition behind this kind of spirituality, associated
in the West with the Benedictine development of "vocation"
and the largely unconscious boost it gave to capitalism. Books
like Sinetar's are destined to play a similar role in the
development of "twenty-first-century minds" suited to economies
(more than spiritualities) of entrepreneurialism.

Tantrika:
Traveling the Road of Divine Love
Asra Q. Nomani
When I began this trip, I had jetted to the Best Western in
Santa Cruz, California, to learn the secrets of sexual ecstasy.
For a little over four years, I confronted dualities, and
they confronted me. Hinduism versus Islam. East versus West.
Male energy versus female. True spirituality versus false
opportunism. I had to choose the values with which I wanted
to live.
Tantrika
tells the compelling story of a woman whose world travels
and spiritual journey bring her face-to-face with the most
fundamental dichotomy of her identity. Born in India and raised
in the foothills of West Virginia, Nomani moves away from
her Muslim upbringing to pursue the Hindu and Buddhist path
of divine love.
What began
as a professional assignment for the Wall Street Journal to
write about America’s hottest new fad, Tantra, became a very
personal odyssey. While Tantra is popularly conceived as an
ancient form of yoga or as "sacred sex," the author's Muslim
parents warn her it is a cult of black magic. In her search
for the full story, Nomani travels from Santa Cruz to the
feet of the Dalai Lama in Northern India, from meditation
caves in Thailand to the homes of orthodox Muslims in Pakistan.
Nomani's journey through the geography of her own spiritual
conflict is a journey of self-discovery, of reconciling her
Hindu ancestry and Muslim upbringing. She confronts darkness
in ways she could never have imagined, but ultimately finds
the path of the divine within herself and all women -- all
"tantrikas."

which are often academic, abstract, and unrelated to our everyday
challenges and concerns, Endless Light is a thought-provoking,
practical guide that illuminates our path in life
Rich in
personal stories and anecdotes, Endless Light offers a deeper
awareness of ourselves, our inner conflicts, and the way we
understand and receive life's bounteous gifts. Drawing upon
the profound, timeless teachings of the ancients as well as
on his own contemporary insights, David Aaron helps truth-seekers
of all faiths to enrich their lives, strengthen their faith,
and enjoy more meaningful relationships.

Kabbalah, the mystical element of Judaism, has undergone an
unprecedented surge in popularity in recent years. In Endless
Light David Aaron, a rabbi who lives in Jerusalem, presents
the ancient system as a source of personal and spiritual sustenance.
In the kabbalah, the creation of the universe is an ongoing
process; thus, Aaron says, we derive happiness from the journey
to our goals rather than from reaching our destination. "If
you are ready to see [life] as the challenge of any good game--where
the challenge itself is what makes it fun--then your life
will not be static, but a dynamic process of growth," he writes.
The philosophy he presents is derived from the Torah and other
Jewish texts and traditions, but Aaron makes it comprehensible
to anyone seeking a new understanding of God, the world, and
themselves.

The
Spirit of Intimacy: Ancient Teachings in the Ways of Relationships
Sobonfu Some
A renowned, respected teacher and mentor to thousands, Sobonfu
Som is one of the first and foremost voices of African spirituality
to come to the West. Som was born in Dano, Burkina Faso, a
remote West African village with a population of about two
hundred people. Dano has preserved the old ways of African
village life, with family structures, spiritual practices,
and methods of living that have been in place for more than
ten thousand years. In The Spirit of Intimacy, Som distills
the ancient teachings and wisdom of her native village to
give insight into the nature of intimate relationships.
Som generously
applies the subtle knowledge from her West African culture
to this one. Simply and beautifully, she reveals the role
of spirit in every marriage, friendship, relationship, and
community. She shares ancient ways to make our intimate lives
more fulfilling and secure and offers powerful insights into
the "illusion of romance," divorce, and loss. Her important
and fascinating lessons from the heart include the sacred
meaning of pleasure, preparing a ritual space for intimacy,
and the connection between sex and spirituality. Her ideas
are intuitively persuasive, provocative, and healing(and supported
by sound practical advice, along with specific rituals and
ceremonies based on those used for thousands of years. With
this book, the spiritual insights of indigenous Africa take
their place alongside those of native America, ancient Europe,
and Asia as important influences on Western readers.

Live
in a Better Way: Reflections on Truth, Love, and Happiness
Bstan-Dzin-Rgya-Mtsho
Imbued with a friendly tone and pithy wisdom, this handsome
handbook to approaching life "in a better way" includes six
of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's most accessible and inspirational
public lectures. Following each talk are the original question-and-answer
sessions in which His Holiness opens himself up to his listeners
and-now-to readers everywhere. His characteristically candid
guidance on living fully and responsibly, especially at the
start of a new millennium, focuses on specific themes that
range from religious tolerance to compassion and nonviolence.
The book also includes a practical and highly readable introduction
to Buddhism and the Dalai Lama's own spiritual heritage, written
by the renowned Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche.
Amazon.com
Occasionally a book comes along that you want to take outside,
shove into the hand of every passerby, and say, "Read this
and be enlightened." The Dalai Lama's latest collection of
lectures is like that. As you read, you begin to think what
a wonderful world it would be if everybody thought like the
Dalai Lama. Though the highest ranked leader of a world religion,
the Dalai Lama insists that some of the most important aspects
of Buddhist practice are nonreligious, particularly the training
of the mind. This he sees as essential to cultivating basic
decency in the day-to-day life of all people. To understand
the motivations of others, to rein in negative emotions, to
examine one's own motivations--these are the steps to living
peacefully and responsibly in the world. On a deeper theoretical
level, the Dalai Lama also introduces the importance of seeing
through reality to the two levels of truth as well as exploring
karma and the nature of existence. Impromptu question-and-answer
sessions round out some of the lectures, giving the listeners
a chance to pose their own questions. Read this and be enlightened.

Let
Yourself Be Loved (Illumination Books)
Phillip Bennett
Illumination in a book, December 5, 1999 Amazon.cm Reviewer:
A friend of mine loaned me this book to read. I just finished
it and am now going to order it to send to my parents because
it is that moving. Mr. Bennett has put into words so many of
my fears about life and spirituality that it brought me to tears
while reading it. Each chapter examines what it means to be
loved by others, God and yourself. Then it ultimately concludes
in showing that loving God and others is loving yourself and
it is O.K., as is contrary in so many facets of our modern society.
The sections conclude with prayers that are meant to help implement
the teachings in the specific chapters. The language is clear,
concise and inspiring. This book is for anyone that considers
themselves remotely spiritual, no matter what doctrine of faith
you practice. The love and message is universal, so let yourself
be loved as the title says. |
There
Is Only Now: A Simple Guide to Spiritual Awakening, Unconditional
Love, Liberation and Transformation
Scott Morrison
Amazon.com Reviewer: I imagine that it must be so difficult
to write a book about how to live in the present moment because
the mere act of trying to live in the present moment takes us
away from it. Despite this difficulty, this book does an admirable
job in helping people understand this and eventually "know"
this in their hearts. I must admit that just reading the book
was incredibly soothing to me. This is a great book if you feel
like you could use some help on your path to the spiritual goldmine
many people talk about. The book that I presently like the most
on this subject is "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato.
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone truly interested in
personal growth and happiness. |
